Alyssa found her stride in her second match. She started ripping groundstrokes and putting points together. It was great to see her shake off a tough first match and play much better in the second.
Kyla did very well in her first varsity matches. She used her speed to track everything down and had a good game plan for each match.
Sydney and Sarah hit many great shots, but some unforced errors got the better of them . They are excited to build on the positive and know that through some practice, eliminate most of those errors.
Sarah and Madison played really well, relying on their experience. They never panicked and showed great mental toughness in their matches. They executed great shots when the match was on the line.
Kylie and Melissa played like veteran players instead of first time varsity starters. They showed poise and confidence in their matches. They took the lead and held it. Being 2-0 is a great way to start a varsity career.
Girls Varsity Tennis
Lakes 2 – Mundelein 5
Alyssa Matthews lost to Isabel A 0-6, 0-6
Alyssa played well. Her groundstokes really looked good. She also did well in defensive mode. There were just too many balls in the corners for her to make shots on.
Kyla Knauf lost to Kalli M 0-6, 1-6
Kyla had a solid game plan. Kalli had a lot of weapons, but Kyla was determined not to back down. She tried to be aggressive and match power for power.
Molly Monson lost to Kylie B 1-6, 0-6
Molly’s game was closer than the score would indicate. Molly’s forehand looked awesome. As the match progressed, Molly started finding the corners. There were a few too many balls into the top of the net to overcome.
Sarah Gattone and Sydney Misiek lost to Jessica P and Kelli C 2-6, 1-6
Sarah and Sydney played most of the points very well. The one area that cost them was the final shot. They would set up great points but could not make that final shot fall.
Maddie Tryner and Sarah Gajda lost to Mikayla E and Bree P 4-6, 3-6
This was a long, drawn out match. Mundelein had the speed and the angles. Lakes had the consistency and the lobs. In the end, Lakes was forced to hit out of position a few too many times.
Melissa Variny and Kylie Jozwik defeated Maggie L and Abbie W 6-3, 6-2
Consistency was the key in this match. Lakes put the ball back over more often and in better places. Both Melissa and Kylie were strong at the net.
Natalie Grolmes and Nicole Jones defeated Cindy G and Meritza C 6-4, 7-5
This match came down to the wire. It was great to see a team with limited varsity experience fight as hard as Natalie and Nicole. They were down in the second set but won the last three games in a row to close out the match. Both Natalie and Nicole were solid at the net and placed their groundstrokes well.

Lakes 5 – Grayslake North 2
Lakes wins its first ever NLCC match.
Alyssa Matthews defeated Catie Dole 6-4, 7-6
Alyssa played a solid game. She relied on good groundstrokes that she moved from corner to corner. She showed great mental toughness battling in the second set and keeping the lead in tie-breaker.
Kyla Knauf lost to Taylor Spiewak 6-4, 3-6, 6-10
Kyla played very well. She adapted to Taylor’s spin serve. She was very consistent, staying in long rallies. A couple of deep balls were the difference in the super tie-breaker.
Molly Monson defeated Kayla Wall 6-2, 6-3
Molly used her speed on the short balls, to pop them back over. Molly also was very solid with her groundstrokes; she also managed to fire off some blistering serves.
Sarah Gattone and Sydney Misiek defeated Lucy Dalton and Emma Indlecoffer 6-1, 6-1
Sydney and Sarah found their grove. They communicated well. They were focused on every point. They found a way to finish points. It was a great turnaround.
Maddie Tryner and Sarah Gajda defeated Lindsea Spiewak and Caroline Kowalski 6-1, 6-0
Maddie and Sarah had a little trouble early in the game, but once they got into their rhythm, they never looked back. Solid groundstrokes and stellar net play brought them the win.
Kylie Jozwik and Melissa Variny defeated Allie Kramer and Emily Miller 6-4, 6-2
This was a hard fought match. Kylie and Melissa were able to adapt to some well hit serves. They both had great moments at the net. Consistency was the key. It is great to see a couple of sophomores be able to play big points and not let the moment get to them.
Natalie Grolmes and Nicole Jones lost to Gabi Charbeneau and Jaclyn Williams 4-6, 6-1, 6-7
Natalie and Nicole played a fantastic match. Nicole was awesome from the baseline, putting the ball back every time; she also had excellently placed volleys. Natalie was not about to be shown up at the net, hitting great volleys as well. Natalie also used her speed to get to wide balls and keep the Eagles in the point.

They adapted their game to attack the other team €™s weaknesses. Even in the loss, they played every point with everything they had.

Alyssa Matthews lost to Sarah Hackman 0-6, 0-6
Alyssa hit quality groundstrokes and worked on some of her finesse shots.
Kyla Knauf lost to Emma Lewandowski 2-6, 4-6
Kyla did a great job turning the match around in the second set. She started building points and forcing her opponent to make tough shots in order to win.
Molly Monson lost to Hayley Hausherr 5-7, 2-6
Molly showed great determination. She was down at least 1-4 in the first set but battled her way back to make a match out of it.
Sarah Gattone and Sydney Misiek lost to Taylor Splingaire and Charlene Bernardo 4-6, 7-5, 6-7
The match took 3 hours 15 minutes to complete. It could not have been any closer. Crisp returns of serve and great net play by Lakes brought them within a point or two of victory.
Maddie Tryner and Sarah Gajda lost to Morgan Bilancia and Grace Lewandowski 5-7, 6-4, 3-6
The match took about 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete. Ten and 15 ball rallies for each point was the norm. Lakes showed great determination to force the match to the third set.
Kylie Jozwik and Melissa Variny defeated Jessica Diol and Hailey Brew 6-2, 6-4
Kylie and Melissa relied on aggressive net play and solid ground strokes to carry the day.
Natalie Grolmes and Nicole Jones lost to Diana Casas and Katie Giever 5-7, 6-4, 4-6
The match took 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete. Nicole hit some fantastic lobs while Natalie roamed the net looking for volley winners.

Kyla Knauf defeated Angelina Waight 6-4, 6-3
Kyla played a really smart match. She drove the ball to the backhand side and looked to drive the ball into the open court on any short shot.
Molly Monson lost to Elie Lelchuk 3-6, 6-1, 5-10
Molly showed great determination. She was down deep in the first set. She developed a plan and executed it perfectly, driving the ball to the backhand side and dropping the ball short. A few service problems cost her the tie-breakers.
Sarah Gattone and Sydney Misiek lost to Krysten Bruce and Emily Bajerski 3-6, 1-6
There were some balls hit with serious pace in this match. Some uncharacteristic unforced errors were too much to overcome.
Sarah Gajda and Madison Tryner defeated Amanda Steinberg and Jasmin Robles 6-0, 6-1
Both Maddie and Sarah did very well at the baseline, hitting away from the net girl and placing them deep. They both played the net well looking to poach for the winner.
Kylie Jozwik and Melissa Variny defeated Kennedy Klessen and Anna Douglas 6-4, 6-4
This match was a bit of a struggle. In certain games, unforced errors were a problem. However, Kylie and Melissa focused on the next point and hit some deep balls into the corners. Mental strength was definitely a key to this match.
Nicole Jones and Natalie Grolmes defeated Mikayla Brown and Carly Burgeson 6-1, 6-2
Natalie was awesome at the baseline, sending everything back over. Nicole was a force at the net, just looking for a volley to hit for a winner.

Alyssa built fantastic points. She really showcased all her weapons.
Kyla Knauf (Lakes) lost to Avra Reddy 0-6, 1-6
Kyla hit well. If her opponent had been a half step slower, the match would have been totally different.

Molly struck the ball well. There were a too few many net cord balls that dropped the wrong way.

This was a well fought match. Most games went to deuce. A couple of unforced errors were the difference.

This was a hard fought match. Lakes led for most of the first two sets. A few games with too many unforced errors allowed for the third set.

Natalie and Nicole played good aggressive tennis. Quality court coverage by GLC was the difference.

Kyla played great tennis. She powered through high backhands and tracked everything down.
